Rondax Fire Tower

Rondax Fire Tower, located on Bald Mountain in the Adirondacks of New York, involves boulder scrambles and a moderate 1.75-mile in-and-out hike.

The trail to Bald Mountain is well worn and easily one of the most popular hikes in the Fulton Chain Wild Forest for good reason. Numerous rocky outcrops and a restored fire tower at the 2,350-foot summit includes sweeping views of the Fulton Chain of Lakes and the Moose River Plains Wild Forest.

At the top of Bald Mountain is the Rondax Fire Tower. First constructed in 1912 out of wood, it stood 20-feet high. It was replaced with a steel tower in 1917 and remained in use until 1990. After being abandoned for over a decade, a non-profit organization began a multi-year restoration project on the fire tower in 2002. It is now open to the public.
