Sandstone Falls

It’s never a wrong time to visit Sandstone Falls at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia.

The week or so I spent camping at the Gorge earlier in the year was a combination of sunny skies and torrential downpours. My campsite down at Brooklyn received over five inches of rainfall in just three days; further away in Beckley, it was just an inch or so. Nonetheless, the heating of the atmosphere made for reliable changes for either beautiful sunsets or foggy scenery. Unfortunately, I missed the fog after a heavy storm at Sandstone Falls by mere minutes but it was still breathtaking nonetheless. The largest waterfall on the New River within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia, the cascades span the river where it is 1,500 feet wide and drop 10 to 25 feet. It marks the transition of the river from a broad river of large bottomlands to a narrow mountain river through a boulder-strewn gorge as it makes its way toward the Gauley River.
