There is no shortage of lighthouses to photograph along the Atlantic Seaboard in the United States, but the unique location of Cape May Lighthouse at Cape May Point, New Jersey makes this one special. Constructed in 1859, this 157-foot-high tower is surrounded by Cape May Military Reservation and Saint Mary by-the-Sea, a retreat house for the Sisters of Saint Joseph. ¶

Barnegat Lighthouse, also known as Old Barney, is

Barnegat Lighthouse, also known as Old Barney, is a historic lighthouse on the northern tip of Long Beach Island on the south side of Barnegat Inlet in New Jersey. Completed in 1859, the 163-foot-tall lighthouse remained in active use as a first-class navigational light until 1927 when it was replaced by a lightship anchored off the coast. The tower was later automated and decommissioned. Barnegat Lighthouse eventually became the centerpiece of a new state park and thanks to local fundraising efforts, the light was reactivated in 2008. ¶

The historic Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is situated

The historic Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is situated on the southwestern shore of Hereford Inlet at the north end of Five Mile Beach in North Wildwood, New Jersey. The area was first used by whalers in the 17th century, but environmental conditions such as shifting sandbars and strong currents caused reason for concern early on. In 1849, a life-saving station was built along Hereford Inlet. A lighthouse was added in 1874. ¶

The iconic and historic Bodie Island Lighthouse is the third that has stood in the vicinity of Bodie Island within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It was completed in 1872 after its prior iteration was dynamited by retreating Confederate troops who feared that it would be used as a Union observation post during the Civil War. ¶

The historic Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located between Cape Henry Light and Bodie Island along the Outer Banks in Corolla, North Carolina. When it was completed, it fulfilled a dire need to light 40 miles of dark coastline. as southbound ships sailing closer to shore to avoid the Gulf Stream were especially in danger because of the shallow waters. ¶

The centerpiece of the annual Ceredo-Kenova AutumnFest is a massive 3,000 hand-carved gourd display, located on the grounds of a historic Queen Anne-style residence along Beech Street. The annual display takes three weeks and hundreds of volunteers to assemble. ¶

The Gaudineer Scenic Area, a part of the Monongahe

The Gaudineer Scenic Area, a part of the Monongahela National Forest, protects relatively untimbered lands in West Virginia. It surrounds Gaudineer Knob, a mountain summit with an elevation of 4,449 feet on the Randolph and Pocahontas County line.

The forests surrounding Gaudineer Knob were cut in the 1920s and early 1930s, but due to a boundary survey error, a 90-acre tract of land was never cut. ¶

The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area in the Mononga

The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area in the Monongahela National Forest protects the most extensive collection of peat bogs in West Virginia. The five boreal-type wetlands serve as the headwaters of the Cranberry River and are adjacent to the Cranberry Wilderness.

Common plants I observed include Tawny cottongrass (Eriophorum virginicum), Cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum), Winterberry (Ilex verticillata), Swamp dewberry (Rubus hispidus), along with Black huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata). ¶
