Tucked in between the Kaaterskill High Peak and Roundtop Mountain to the north and the Plattekill and Indian Head Mountains to the south, the Plattekill Clove is one of the most rugged areas of the northern Catskill Mountains of New York. I have come to miss the snow since moving to Kentucky from upstate New York, where it was not unusual to be buried in deep snow at any one point during the winter months. There was something about the sight of those perfect snow crystals that invigorated the soul, bringing forth a sense of renewal and vitality. Above all else, I loved to snowshoe and explore the Catskills and the Adirondacks because there was a lack of crowds. You should have seen my excitement when three back-to-back storms this month dumped a wintery combination across Appalachia. Not one for being idle when presented with such a photographic opportunity, I headed out in search of unique aerials and some ground shots. The Kaaterskill Clove features many waterfalls, including the namesake Kaaterskill Falls. Long the subject of the Hudson River School art movement, the Kaaterskill Clove is one of the grand highlights of the northern Catskills in New York. The grand centerpiece of this deep gorge is Katterskill Falls, a 260-foot-high, two-tier sheer drop waterfall. Situated along the climactic Shawangunk Mountain range, Minnewaska State Park Preserve features forested, craggy terrain, many cascades, crystal clear sky lakes, dozens of miles of paths to hike and bike on, cliffs to climb and boulder upon, and a lot more.
