Spanning over the course of a week, the Tulip Time festival seamlessly weaves together the rich tapestry of the region's Dutch heritage and its enduring tulip-growing tradition, which traces its roots back to the 19th century. The meticulously manicured gardens and arranged flowerbeds serve as a breathtaking backdrop for the festivities. If you're looking for a picturesque destination to explore in Menifee County, Kentucky, then Broke Leg Falls is a must-visit spot. This stunning waterfall is situated along Broke Leg Creek and stands at an impressive height of 60 feet, providing a magnificent view of the sandstone gorge that surrounds it.

Although the site was once part of a state park, it fell into disrepair by the late 1960s, and most travelers overlooked it in favor of the Mountain Parkway. Fortunately, the county took over the area in 2010-11; since then, it has undergone a significant facelift. New gazebos, a parking area, and restored trails have been added, providing visitors better access to the falls.

However, the site suffered a significant blow in 2012 when an EF-3 tornado swept through the region, causing extensive damage to the trees in the Broke Leg Falls gorge. Although many trees and stumps were removed in the aftermath of the storm, many were left behind to protect the area's delicate ecology. Despite this setback, the gorge has made an incredible recovery in the years since the tornado strike. Visitors can once again enjoy the area's breathtaking natural beauty, with its towering waterfall and lush greenery.

📸 Former C&O South Side Branch (today’s Southside Trail); Arbuckle Coal & Coke Company coke ovens; Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum); Red trillium (Trillium erectum)

The warm spring weather of April 2022 was perfect for a hike along the Southside Trail, the former South Side Branch of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia. This railway line, which runs along the New River between South Side Junction and Macdougal, was built between 1889-1903 to serve coal tipples and coking operations in the valley. The branch was abandoned in the 1950s after a significant landslide.

Highlights from the trek include coming across the coke ovens of the Arbuckle Coal & Coke Company along Arbuckle Creek and the tracks of the former South Side Branch which are partly intact decades after their last use. ¶

Nestled in the rolling hills of Fayette County, West Virginia, lies Plum Orchard Lake. The 202-acre lake is part of the Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area, surrounded by oak and hickory forests and teeming wetlands. What makes this truly unique is the thousands of American white water lilies (Nymphaea odorata) covering the lake’s north end. These were planted for ornamentation by a local garden club in the 1970s but have since overtaken portions of the lake. ¶

Pioneer Farm is a living history museum located in

Pioneer Farm is a living history museum located in a remote corner of Twin Falls Resort State Park in West Virginia. It is situated on a working farm and has been preserved to reflect the daily life of a pioneer family in the 19th century. However, the museum almost did not come to be. In the 1960s, former park superintendent Morris Harsh discovered a cabin from the 1835 era hidden within the walls of a 1915 farmhouse. Despite a lack of support from the state, the cabin was restored to its original function.

Pioneer Farm faced problems with vandalism that almost led to its closure. To address this issue, it was decided to have the museum become self-sustaining with a full-time live-in caretaker or family. ¶
