On a clear autumn day, I found myself at the R. J. Corman farm near Wilmore. It was no surprise to see the horse and cattle farm beautifully lined with maple trees, their leaves a fiery spectrum of reds. The scene seemed a fitting homage to Rick Corman’s enduring impact.

Richard J. “Rick” Corman was a prominent businessman and entrepreneur in Central Kentucky, known for his dynamic presence and significant contributions to the railroad industry.

Born in 1955, Rick Corman began working in the railroad sector at a young age. His entrepreneurial journey started in 1973 when he established his own company with just one backhoe. He nurtured this venture into the R. J. Corman Railroad Group, a comprehensive railroad service and support enterprise that offers services including construction, operation of short-line railroads, and emergency response for the railroad industry.

Corman’s strong work ethic, visionary leadership, and innovation fueled the growth of the R. J. Corman Railroad Group. The company became notable in the regions it operated, particularly recognized by its striking red locomotives which symbolized swift and efficient service.

Beyond his entrepreneurial success, Rick Corman was equally celebrated for his philanthropy and active engagement in community work. He bravely fought multiple myeloma for over a decade, exhibiting relentless tenacity and resilience that mirrored his approach to business.

Rick Corman passed away on August 23, 2013, leaving a profound legacy in both the commercial realm and his local community.

Atop Backbone Mountain in the heart of West Virginia's Tucker County, the Olson Fire Tower stands as a lookout of history with one of the best vantage points for a sunrise or sunset.

Erected in 1922 as the Backbone Tower, Backbone was the state's very first fire tower. The building was replaced in 1963 with Olson Tower, named for Ernst B. Olson for his 28 years of fire control and conservation program service to the Monongahela National Forest. ¶

Initially, I viewed Ashland as just another urban area, notable more for its commercial and industrial aspects than for its scenic or cultural offerings. In the serene setting of Ohio’s Hocking Hills St

In the serene setting of Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park, a remarkable concrete bridge spans Old Man’s Creek. Made from a series of cast-in-place concrete platforms and piers, this bridge is a testament to both resilience and design.

The need for this structure arose from a catastrophic event on January 7, 1998. A flash flood ravaged Old Man Cave’s Gorge Trail, severely damaging its three stone bridges and completely obliterating seven wooden bridges. This disaster made it clear that a stronger, more durable trail system was urgently needed to withstand the impulses of nature.

The reconstruction project unfolded in two distinct phases. The initial phase focused on establishing temporary trails and erecting temporary bridges. At the same time, extensive computer simulations of floods were conducted. These simulations were crucial to ensure that the new designs would be robust and long-lasting, especially in an age where storms are becoming more severe with the gradual heating of the atmosphere.

In November 2000, the second phase commenced. This phase was more ambitious, featuring the construction of a suspension bridge near Cedar Falls, the replacement of two stone arch bridges at Old Man’s Cave and Lower Falls, the restoration of the stone arch bridges at Upper Falls and Devil’s Bathtub, the repair of a steel bridge near Cedar Falls, the completion of 15 steel and concrete bridges, and the creation of Ohio’s first formally engineered stepping stone crossing over Old Man’s Creek along the Gorge Trail. This innovative crossing was characterized by cantilevered reinforced concrete pedestal abutments.

The extensive efforts to rebuild Hocking Hills’ trail system spanned four years, culminating in a $4.1 million project that was officially recognized by state and local officials on May 17, 2002.
