Baker’s Camp Covered Bridge

Also known as Hills Bridge, Baker’s Camp Covered Bridge spans Big Walnut Creek on County Road 650 North in Putnam County, Indiana. The original crossing dates to the 1870s, named after the nearby Baker’s Camp. The current bridge, built in 1901 by Joseph J. Daniels, features a Burr arch truss design. The single-span structure rests on cut-stone abutments, with vertical plank siding and a metal roof.

Joseph J. Daniels, a renowned bridge builder, constructed 60 bridges throughout his career, often using the Burr arch design. The Burr arch combines an arch with kingpost trusses for added stability.

Designated as part of Indiana State Route 31 in 1919, the road became US Route 36 in 1926, with a new alignment bypassing the bridge in 1932. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1989 and again in 2014, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2024.
