Pine Bluff Covered Bridge

The Pine Bluff Covered Bridge spans Big Walnut Creek in Putnam County, Indiana, carrying County Road 900 North.

Built in 1886 by Joseph Albert Britton using the Howe truss design, the double-span bridge rests on concrete abutments and a central pier. It features board-and-batten siding and a metal roof.

Britton (1839-1929), a Parke County native, constructed about 40 covered bridges in the area. A carpenter by trade, he also served in the Civil War and later returned to bridge building, with his first bridge, the Narrows Bridge, located in Turkey Run State Park.

The Howe truss, patented by William H. Howe in 1840, incorporates iron bars and turnbuckles to regulate tension, resolving issues with all-wood trusses. The bridge’s significance diminished after the establishment of Indiana State Road 31 and the closure of the New Maysville post office in 1919.
