The Rolling Stone Covered Bridge spans Big Walnut Creek on County Road 800 North in Putnam County, Indiana.
Built in 1915 by Joseph Albert Britton, the single-span bridge features the Burr arch truss design. It rests on concrete abutments, with vertical plank siding and a metal roof. After completion, county commissioners had a nearby boulder dynamited to protect the bridge from potential flood damage.
Britton (1839-1929), a native of Parke County, built around 40 covered bridges in the region. Though trained as an attorney, he returned to carpentry and built his first bridge in 1882, the Narrows Bridge, now in Turkey Run State Park.
The Burr arch truss, patented by Theodore Burr in 1817, combines an arch and king post trusses for enhanced stability.
The bridge’s significance waned after Indiana State Road 31 was established in 1919, offering a more direct route between Bainbridge and New Maysville.
