The nature reserve is an outstanding example of a rare, post oak opening habitat that supports dozens of rare plant species not often seen elsewhere in the state because of cultivation. Because of the abundance of summer wildflowers, the prairie is loaded with butterflies and moths.

The preserve features 1½ miles of loop and in-and-out hiking trails.
From West Union, follow OH Route 247 north for .7 miles. Turn left onto Chapparal Road and continue north for 2.8 miles. Turn right onto Hawk Hill Road and follow for .2 miles to a parking area on the left.
