Discovering a Sandstone Rockhouse in Carter County, Kentucky
The charmingly rustic Rock House Road lies on the east side of Tygarts Creek in Carter County, Kentucky. This one-lane gravel path winds through an impressive sandstone rockhouse, a natural marvel that gives the road its name.
As you journey along Rock House Road, you’ll find yourself near the ghost town of Deevert. Established by Lorenzo D. O’Roark, the area once contemplated two names—Deevert and Overt—suggesting it may have been intended as two neighboring communities. At its peak, Deevert was home to 150 residents. The town’s post office, a relic of its more bustling days, operated from May 7, 1901, until it closed its doors in January 1942.
Today, just a handful of houses dot the area, more abandoned than active. It’s worth the drive to explore this remote corner of Carter County and discover this hidden natural wonder.
